How to Get a Flat Stomach After Childbirth
At a certain point after childbirth, women may begin to wonder how they can improve the appearance of their abdomen. Although a healthy diet and exercise/toning workouts are an important part of overall health and achieving aesthetic goals, it may take an alternative method to get a “flat stomach” after childbirth. After pregnancy, the muscles of the midsection are typically stretched and separated, resulting in a diminution of the natural curves of the waist. In addition, as a result of the abdominal skin stretching to accommodate a growing baby, there is excess skin and fat that remains after delivery. These changes that occur to the body as a result of pregnancy typically will not revert spontaneously. Diet and exercise alone will not be enough to fix the lost curves, protruding belly, and excess abdominal tissue that remain. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Robert E. Rothfield, MD, FACS, explains two procedures that can help restore a tighter and rejuvenated look after childbirth.
Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, can help to address the common concerns shared by women after pregnancy that may prevent them from feeling as comfortable or confident as they previously were. During the abdominoplasty procedure, excess skin and fat from the tummy are removed and the loose tissue is tightened. In addition, the stomach muscles which become separated during pregnancy are sewn back together and put back into their pre-pregnancy position. In this way, the midsection is recontoured to regain a more curvy, flat, and slimmer appearance. Tummy tuck surgery may be performed on its own or as part of a more comprehensive cosmetic treatment plan, such as a Mommy Makeover.
Mommy Makeover
In addition to a flatter stomach, women may want to address other areas also affected by their pregnancy. These areas may include their hips, thighs, or love handles, and often after breastfeeding, their breasts. A Mommy Makeover combines at least two or more procedures designed to achieve these goals and help restore one’s pre-pregnancy figure. Some of the most common surgical options in a Mommy Makeover include liposuction, breast augmentation and/or breast lift (mastopexy), and the above mentioned tummy tuck. During an initial consultation, Dr. Rothfield will evaluate the patient’s unique goals to form a customized surgical plan.
