Liposuction / Liposculpture
Liposuction is a body sculpture technique that removes superficial fat deposits to improve body contour and reduce size. It is not intended as a weight loss substitute. The best candidates for liposuction/liposculpture work out regularly, but still have fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. Traditional liposuction/liposculpture removes excess fat by placing a thin tube, that is connected to a suction device, through a small incision in the skin, which then vacuums out the unwanted fat. While this is an effective process, there are newer methods that, in certain patients, can be even more efficient in removing unwanted fat. Our plastic surgeon, Robert E. Rothfield, MD, has been using ultrasonic liposuction since 1994 and has incorporated the newest generation of ultrasonic liposuction techniques into his practice. He has also been active in teaching the technique to other plastic surgeons across the country. Ultrasonic liposuction employs a specialized device that uses sound waves (ultrasound) to selectively break up fat immediately prior to suction removal. This advanced technique allows Dr. Rothfield to perform liposuction/liposculpture with great precision and effectiveness. In women, the most common areas operated on are the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, and beneath the chin. Men more commonly request liposuction of the abdomen and flanks (love handles).
