Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
Otoplasty is a common procedure that is performed to make ears less prominent in both children and adults. The optimal age for surgery in children is generally between 5 and 8 years of age, just before grade school. This is the age that children first become aware of physical differences between themselves and their peers. At this age, the ear is almost 85% of its adult size and children can be willing participants in their surgery. By manipulating the ear cartilage through an incision hidden behind the ear, board-certified plastic surgeon Robert E. Rothfield, MD, FACS can reshape the ear to create a much improved appearance which, in turn, may help to improve self confidence.
